Day 6:    Bentota – Kandy

  •  Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
  • Temple of the tooth (UNESCO-Welterbe)

The elephant orphanage at Pinnawala near Kandy is one of the most popular attractions in Sri Lanka. Orphaned elephants are taken in here and raised with human help. The resulting artificial herd now comprises about 100 animals. The latest attraction is the twin elephants born in September 2021!

Observing the imposing pachyderms up close during morning feeding and the subsequent “pool party” in the river, is an impressive experience for young & old.

Day 8:    Kandy – Hatton – Kitulgala

Kandy – Hatton

The train ride from Kandy to Hatton leads through the enchanting landscape marked by the green of the dense tea plantations. The rolling hills fly by like paintings. The route is considered one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world.

Hatton

Laksapana Falls

The legendary Laksapana waterfalls with their majestic water stream are the most imposing and beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka with a height of almost 130 m.

Legend has it that in times of great drought, a golden vessel appears in the deep pool at the base of the waterfall. As soon as this phenomenon becomes visible, the gods send rain to protect the treasure again. Another legend says that there are tunnels behind the falls that connect Laksapana with Aberdeen Falls. Feel free to go in search of them!

After this refreshing excursion, you will reach the jungle village of Kitulgala.

Day 10:  Kitulgala – Airport

  •  Kitulgala
  • Pilikuttawa Rajamaha Viharaya
  • Airport

Pilikuttuwa is an ancient Sinhalese forest monastery where secluded monks still live. The magical place is rarely visited by tourists and is therefore a real insider tip for authentic experiences of Sinhalese culture.

The 99 monastery caves are spread over a wildly romantic forest area of more than 80 hectares. If you are lucky, a monk will personally guide you through the caves and over the grounds, explaining the significance of the prehistoric writings, wall paintings and cave dwellings. From the rock plateau you have a magnificent view of the surrounding jungle forests.

Now it is time to say goodbye! An exciting Sri Lanka round trip is coming to an end. Hopefully you will leave our beautiful island well rested and with many unforgettable impressions!

The spiritual heart of Sri Lanka beats in Kandy. The Temple of the Tooth is the holiest site for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and also the most beautiful Buddhist temple in the country. A tooth of Buddha is kept as a relic in the main temple.

According to tradition, the owner of the relic has the right to rule over Sri Lanka. Three times a day, the room with the shrine where the tooth is kept, is opened to pilgrims and visitors in a puja ceremony. Monks in saffron robes and women in white dresses pass the shrine. Here you can place flowers – as the locals do – and light an oil lamp.

Day 7:    Kandy

  • Old Town
  • Market & Bazaar

Kandy Market & Old Town

The busy old town of Kandy, with its colonial architecture and bustling streets, invites you to take a leisurely stroll. A rich selection of cafés and restaurants offer the opportunity to watch life in the lanes while enjoying a good cup of Ceylon tea.

In the bustling market and narrow bazaar, you will experience the haggling of the traders at their lush, colourful stalls with exotic fruits and vegetables, but also with high-quality handicrafts and antique jewellery. Get dressed in a colourful sari at one of the stalls and feel as stylish as a local!

Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue

Visitors have a panoramic view of the city and the opportunity for taking spectacular pics from a hill on which the snow-white Buddha statue of Bahirawakanda watches over Kandy. Climbing up the steep white staircase with the 88-foot statue in the background, is a famous Instagram post.

The temple of Bahirawakanda is open to visitors. Devotees place flowers here, light oil lamps and rest for a moment. The best time to visit Bahirawakanda is at dusk, when the backdrop of lights from the city of Kandy spreads out in front of the illuminated statue.

Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Garden of Peradeniya is the largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. During a walk through the exotic park with its more than 4,000 plant species, visitors experience the splendour of the colourful, tropical plant world.

Strange species such as the “toothbrush tree” grow here, monkeys romp through the garden and huge, sleeping flying foxes hang upside down from the trees, so there is plenty to discover for young and old.

Day 9:    Kitulgala

Kitulgala

Now you will experience real jungle feeling! Kitulgala is a world of wonders with a myriad of colourful plants, birds and insects on all levels! The forest is full of life and the game of light and shadow through the dense, tall trees is amazing.

Aberdeen Falls

After all the adventures, a relaxing picnic awaits you at one of the most idyllic places in Sri Lanka. The 98 m high Aberdeen Falls are among the most picturesque waterfalls. As they are a little hidden, they are rarely visited. The view from the terrace down into the valley is breathtaking.

The natural pool at the bottom of the multi-level waterfall is framed by imposing rocks and hidden caves. The clear water of the basin invites you to take a refreshing swim and you can enjoy a picnic on the shore with a view of the impressive natural spectacle.

Belilena

The winding Belilena cave system is hidden in the middle of the jungle, where traces of human habitation some 30,000 years old have been found. The natural cave is not only interesting for hobby archaeologists, who find remains of human skeletons and ancient dinosaur fossils here. Eyewitnesses have reported seeing dwarf humans in the cave. Objects were also found that indicate the existence of mysterious inhabitants…

The adventurous cave expedition leads along a narrow path through the impassable jungle with many wild animals and exotic birds. The entrance to the cave lies behind the cascades of a waterfall.
