The village women prepare a traditional lunch meal, which is eaten in the farm workers’ hut. Young visitors are allowed to eat in the tree house, which is used at night to spot predatory elephants! Here everyone is allowed to eat with their hands!

The temple is one of the oldest monasteries in the world. The most popular attraction is the huge, resting Buddha in the first temple cave.
Knuckles Mountain Range
Now you will leave the classic itinerary and take a detour into untouched landscapes. The name Knuckles Mountain Range is derived from the knuckle shape formed by the five highest peaks between 1,500 and 2,000 m above sea level. The deserted landscape in this mountain range is an oasis of silence and deceleration.
Mini World`s End & Bambarakiri Falls
One of the most beautiful places in the Knuckles Mountains is Mini World`s End. The place is one of several steeply sloping rocks in Sri Lanka called “World`s End”. Here you spread out your picnic blanket and enjoy the wide view. Explore the area on short hikes to waterfalls and viewpoints.

Day 11: Habarana – Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa
- Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
- Cycling tour of the ancient royal city in Polonnaruwa (UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
The 200-metre-high Lion Rock is set in idyllic ancient gardens, surrounded by the remains of a former palace complex. The fort is Sri Lanka’s most important and most visited UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The history of the site dates back to 7,000 years ago, when King Ravana founded this amazing complex. The original palace, researchers suspect, lies undiscovered inside the rock. It is said that – from time to time -, otherwise closed gaps in the rock can be seen standing open…
The rock palace experienced a second heyday in the 5th century under King Kasyapa. The king’s son used the rock as a refuge from his brother and had elaborate buildings, a water supply system that was pioneering for the time and ingenious water gardens, which can still be seen today.
Halfway up the climb, visitors reach the “Cloud Maidens”: well-preserved murals made of natural paint that are several centuries old. Those who have made it up the narrow spiral staircase with its 1,860 steps to the plateau, are rewarded with a pleasantly cooling breeze and a fantastic view over the surrounding area.
Polonnaruwa Ancient City
The ancient royal city of Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka for about 200 years after the conquest of Anuradhapura in the 11th century. After the Sinhalese rulers abandoned the city, the magnificent buildings were overgrown by the jungle and only rediscovered by the British in 1820.
The imposing ruins of the once magnificent buildings are spread out over a wide area and are therefore easy to explore by bicycle. Between the main sights, the monastery ruins and the impressive Buddha statues, a considerable monkey population has settled in Polonnaruwa, providing enjoyable free entertainment.

Temple of the tooth
The spiritual heart of Sri Lanka beats in Kandy. The Temple of the Tooth is the holiest site for Buddhists in Sri Lanka and also the most beautiful Buddhist temple in the country. A tooth of Buddha is kept as a relic in the main temple.
According to tradition, the owner of the relic has the right to rule over Sri Lanka. Three times a day, the room with the shrine where the tooth is kept, is opened to pilgrims and visitors in a puja ceremony. Monks in saffron robes and women in white dresses pass the shrine. Here you can place flowers – as the locals do – and light an oil lamp.
Train ride from Kandy to Watawala
The train ride from Kandy to Hatton leads through the enchanting landscape marked by the green of the dense tea plantations. The rolling hills fly by like paintings. The route is considered one of the most beautiful railway lines in the world. The best tea in Sri Lanka grows in the area around Hatton: Maskeliya. Only tea to which this tea is added is real Ceylon tea!
Kitulgala
Now you will experience real jungle feeling! Kitulgala is a world of wonders with a myriad of colourful plants, birds and insects on all levels! The forest is full of life and the game of light and shadow through the dense, tall trees is amazing.
