Day 3: Excursion to Negombo

Highlights

  • Tuk Tuk Tour of Negombo

Negombo is originally the oldest fishing village in Sri Lanka. Life in the city is still shaped today by fishing. The busy little port town with its colonial fortress and the colorful outrigger boats in the harbor was once the center of the cinnamon trade.

The cityscape is still reminiscent of the Dutch and Portuguese rule. The old town center with its narrow streets, old churches and temples, and a colorful fruit and vegetable market is well worth seeing. It is also worth making a detour to the fish market on the beach, which opens early every day. Explore the city in a fun way in a breezy tuk tuk.

  • Drive to Bentota

Today the journey goes south via Colombo to the popular seaside resort of Bentota.

With its museums, monuments, and the Pettah Bazaar, Colombo offers a good impression of the lively, oriental life in Sri Lanka and an insight into the country’s changeful past. The winding streets of Colombo Fort and the old town invite you to stroll, be amazed, and shop. Quiet parks, quiet temples, and hidden cafes offer relaxation from the hustle and bustle of the lively port city.

Day 6 & 7: Bentota

Highlights

  • Relaxation – bathing – lazing around – hammock – wellness – sunbathing – sport – water sports

The area around Bentota is well developed for tourism and is known as a center for Ayurveda treatments. The cheerful place awaits sun-seekers with palm-fringed dream beaches and paradisiacal bays as well as numerous water sports on the Bentota River.

In the vicinity of Bentota, beaches in Aluthgama and Beruwela beckon. Aluthgama is an insider tip because bathers can relax largely undisturbed on the long beach here on the peninsula between the lagoon and the Indian Ocean. The beaches of the neighboring towns of Beruwela and Bentota combine to form a kilometer-long, snow-white dream beach with shallow water.

Day 8: Excursions in and around Bentota

Highlights

  • Boat trip through the mangroves on the Bentota River
  • Bentota City Tour
  • Cooking class & eating with a local family

Today you take an adventurous boat trip on the Bentota River through the impressive mangrove forest with its mysterious atmosphere, its lush vegetation, and its exotic fauna. The mangrove forest is home to a wide variety of birds including sea eagles, kingfishers, and pelicans. Macaque monkeys frolic in the trees and crocodiles, lizards, freshwater snakes and a variety of fish and shrimp lurk in the water. You will come within reach of monitor lizards, crocodiles, and snakes!

Get to know Bentota with a local guide: take a tuk-tuk on a small tour. You will visit the fish market, the Buddhist Kandevihara temple with its temple elephants, and the small city center with its bustling shops.

Also make a detour to Galapatha Rajamaha Viharaya, a small Buddhist temple from the 12th century with beautiful wall paintings and a tooth relic. A real insider tip!

Then you have an invitation: a local host family welcomes you at home to prepare a typical “Rice & Curry” with you in the local kitchen. Pamper your palate with exotic flavors and find a family connection!

Day 10: Bentota - Galle - Hikkaduwa

Highlights

  • Drive to Hikkaduwa
  • Visit the historic port city of Galle (UNESCO World Heritage)

The drive from Bentota to Galle leads along the coast through lively seaside resorts and sleepy fishing villages. The dream setting of turquoise blue water, golden yellow beaches, and emerald green jungle are unique.

Before the arrival of the Portuguese in the 16th century, Galle was the island’s main port and reached the height of its development in the 18th century during the Dutch colonial era. Magnificent buildings and the fortress around the old town bear witness to the eventful history of the historic port city.

While strolling over the walls of the well-preserved fortress and through the partly renovated old town with its beautiful shops and cafés, you will experience the unmistakable colonial flair. On the promenade in front of the lighthouse, snake charmers and cliff divers provide easy thrills!

The small town of Hikkaduwa on the south coast of Sri Lanka is traditionally one of the most popular holiday destinations in the country. Above all, water sports enthusiasts will find their paradise here: whether snorkelers on the offshore coral banks, divers on the shipwrecks close to the coast, or surfers in the high waves of the sea surf.

Vacationers will find shallow bathing water on the long, palm-fringed beach and a good selection of cafes and restaurants. All in all, it is rather busy here with a lot of music, beach parties, and sporting activities on the beach.

To prevent the illegal sale of eggs deposited on the beach, the employees collect the eggs immediately after they are deposited and release the animals a few days after they hatch. You get an insight into the work of the animal rights activists and can experience the animals up close.

Now it’s time to say goodbye! Hopefully, you will leave our beautiful island relaxed and with many wonderful memories! Get home well!
